Art Pop House, Blairgowie
A bold coastal retreat full of colour, depth and sculptural warmth.
Project Snapshot
Blairgowrie Residence is a reimagined mid-century coastal home brought to life with colour, sculptural furniture and a rich layering of robust materials. What was once an open, undefined series of rooms has been transformed into an intimate sequence of spaces that feel warm, expressive and quietly sophisticated. With art at its heart and materials grounded in nature, the home achieves a balance between beachside ease and curated contemporary living.
Client Brief
The clients wanted to revitalise their mid-century home with more intimacy, personality and material richness. The existing open-plan layout lacked quiet moments. They envisioned a home that felt calm yet expressive, with spaces that showcased their love of art, colour and tactile materials. They wanted zones that encouraged conversation, contemplation and connection without losing the relaxed spirit of a coastal retreat.
Design Story
The home began as an expansive, open-plan space with little definition or emotional tone. DMP Creative reworked the floor plan to create a sequence of connected zones, each with its own atmosphere while still feeling cohesive. The clients’ collection of limited-edition Charles Blackman lithographs set the palette, inspiring a bold yet calming interplay of colour, sculptural furniture and tactile materials. Pieces from Ligne Roset, HC28 and Wittmann add a playful sophistication, while a Dinosaur Designs rug introduces movement and coastal vibrancy.
Materiality grounds the home in its beachside setting. Yakisugi charred timber brings a dramatic organic texture indoors, balanced by cast in-situ concrete plinths, blackened steel and sand-infused brick tiles. The integrated concrete entertainment unit becomes the architectural anchor, dividing the open plan into two intimate living zones. Bronze mirror detailing gives the unit a floating effect, while the double-sided fireplace adds warmth and a sense of ritual.
In the dining area, lighting creates a gallery-like feel, highlighting artworks in museum glass and reinforcing the home’s curatorial sensibility. The kitchen continues the layered approach with calacatta luxe porcelain benchtops, bronze mirror, matte black cabinetry and custom joinery that blends seamlessly into the overall palette. Across the home, sculptural forms, expressive colour and robust materials come together to create a contemporary coastal retreat full of personality and depth.
“Many thanks to you and the team. The place is functioning just as we had hoped but with the added style. There isn’t a day when we don’t sit back and contemplate how wonderful it all turned out.” - Denis Liubinas, Art Pop House Project
